My name is James from Richmond, VA and I'm the proud owner of an '83.5 Vanagon Westy. I found out about this site from some bus owners I complemented out at Bonnaroo this last weekend and they told me to join the bus club so here I am.I've had my Helga baby since 2007 when I picked her up on the south side of Chicago. She's been running really great though I ended up getting an engine rebuild in 2009-ish, with multiple other things fixed as well. I took her, or rather she took me to the west coast in 2011, as well as to many other cities and states including French Canada. The trip was monumental.Currently my van is SOL and is sitting on the street behind my house. The auto section of the trans is shot and I am trying to avoid ponying up the $$$ for an entire rebuild. I have a water-cooled 83 Vanagon Westy with a 1.9L. A couple months ago the auto transmission got stuck in 1st and has been there ever since. After taking it to a local shop in Richmond, VA called the Old Volks Home the mechanic said it's only the automatic section of the transmission, not the entire thing that's faulty. I said 'great, how much?' and was told that I have to find the part because they can't guarantee the work under Virginia Law.To make a long story short, I need the automatic section of the transmission and I am having trouble. I called the local VW people and even Ken with VanAgain and came up with nothing. I tried German Transaxle in WA but it'll cost an arm and a leg for shipping, and they no longer do just the auto section, only full rebuilds. I'm out of gas and my van is getting lonely.I suck at this and need help!
