Kewl thanks for the response Collie. I hope more people will utilize it because it's a far easier way for all Moonies to reminisce the campouts. I sure would utilize it to show pics of others and alls' kewl buses

Yep 13 turns is ok. Putting back by number of turns is just a general guide to get it close assuming it was aligned correctly before you started.

Hi newbie here. Looking at a 73 westy. She says it has a new crate motor from VW. All iv'e ever had were type 1 motors. Besides being more to rebuild can any one tell me pro and cons to a pancake compared to a type1? Do you need to adjust valves, do they run that much better on the hi-way? Thanks for any info. Greg

On a 73 you need to adjust the valves, but they're pretty accessable. After you've done it once or twice it's pretty easy. The pancake is a step up in power. The motor itself is fairly simple to rebuild- heck, after 2 or 3 tries even I got one to run! It's been a long long time since I fooled around with a type 1, so I can't offer comparisons, but I've grown to like the type 4 setup, but I also have fuel injection which is very nice when it's working properly. If the motor is new, you shouldn't have to worry about a rebuild for a while, as long as all the sheet metal and foam gaskets are in place. Check if she's got the paperwork on the motor etc. so you know who put it in. (A real mechanic vs. "a guy who owed my brother-in-law money" etc)Good luck!

Ive had both upright and pancake. I dont think I could see myself going back to an upright in a Bus unless it was a splitty of course.

The '73 bus should have a 1700cc motor with dual carbs.....not a bad engine, but they are a different beast than the 1600 uprights......the 'pancake' is beefier, lasts a bit longer and powers the bay windows a bit better (my opinion).....they are still the simple design, easy to work on and parts are readily available.

The '73 still needs all the usual maintanence, as the stock motor will still have manual lifters and the need for valve adjustments and usual stuff......

The only downfall to me in the '73 model is the lack of sleeping quarters upstairs as the '73 has just a cot.......

But, if it runs well and you get the vibe from it......go for it.....

well everybody is giving the pros of a type 4 motor . here are the cons bad exhust design, bad about dropping valve seats, need a clylinder head temp gage system, stock carbs weren't very good, after market carb not much better if you have to go the cheap way.. parts cost more, Harder to work on. pop top sleeping as collie said. later mark d

Looks like your questions were answered, so will just jump in and say howdy. If you need a second set of eyes on the bus let me know or parts. I am just down the road from you. Will be in Cartersville midday Saturday to look at a bus myself.

Looked again and now know who you are! Met you at the car show up there.
