I agree, but the gallery for this software is not all that simple to use, prob why it was harldy used. I am looking into whether there are any plugins to make it easier.

Kewl thanks for the response Collie. I hope more people will utilize it because it's a far easier way for all Moonies to reminisce the campouts. I sure would utilize it to show pics of others and alls' kewl buses

Yep 13 turns is ok. Putting back by number of turns is just a general guide to get it close assuming it was aligned correctly before you started.

Good evening all. I tried to find the right forum to ask this question and ended up here.

Here is the question: About how much should I expect to pay to have a full restoration type paint job on a 1986 Vanagon Westfalia that has some minor rust in two of the seams (one one each side).

The van has been repainted once and you can see where the second coat of paint is pealing off in a few places.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Tim

Quality paint / paint job with some very minor body work can be around $3-$4K, at least that's what my local paint shop would charge me.

I guess I should just go ahead and ask the next logical question: who do you recommend and where are the located.

A few things affect how much a repaint will cost. The second paintjob is the biggest concern. As it is peeling off it obviously wasnt done right, and may be covering bigger problems than some seam rust. There might also be bondo under that paintjob, so it sounds like it will take considerably more prep than painting over the original paint.

Next would be determining what exactly you mean by a "full resto" paintjob. Originally it had a basic single stage paintjob, not too hard to reproduce. The condition of the door jambs would be one of the biggest factors, if they needed to be repainted, ect. It would be a good idea to take a look at the cargo floor area. Strictly exterior, standard prep, no suprises, Tomaz is right on the money. A lot of major metalwork, nose skin replacement, ect should cost you a LOT more money.

Now if you wanted a thermoset or thermoplastic clearcoat type paintjob color sanded with a mile deep finish, that could cost you 12-14 thousand without major bodywork.

Your third option would be to embark on a voyage of the discovery of the joys of bodywork and paint and do it yourself. You can do a job that you can be proud of for the cost of a sprayer and materials.

I believe the body to be sound and free of bondo. I am looking for a paint job that starts with removing all of the old paint, fixing any of the problem rust areas and repainting back to something near factory original.
