Yep 13 turns is ok. Putting back by number of turns is just a general guide to get it close assuming it was aligned correctly before you started.

The latest edition of The Appalachian Voice, a non-profit organization committed to protecting the land, air, and water of the central and southern Appalachian region, has an article covering some of the regions most beautiful waterfalls.

Here are the ones they mention and have pictured,
-Crabtree Falls, in Nelson Co., VA.
-Peach Tree Falls, in Naoma, WV.
-Princess Falls, near Whitley City, KY
-Fall Creek Falls, in Pikeville, TN
-Toms Creek Falls, in McDowell Co., NC
-Tallulah Gorge Falls, in NE GA
-Cedar Falls, in SE Ohio's Hocking Hills State Park, PA/Ohio

Here's a link to the article, http://appvoices.org/2011/06/13/waterfalls-of-appalachia/

The only one that I've been to is the Tallulah Gorge Falls and it is spectacular! My favorite one that I'd like to see is the Princess Falls in KY. That one looks really cool!

I also recommend the falls at Linville Gorge in Linville, NC. and Cloudland Canyon in the far corner of NW GA.

Anybody else have any experiences at any of these places, or would like to add to the list of most see waterfalls? Sounds like a good road trip to me.

I think my father in law has taken us to the McDowell , NC one. He took us to an awesome huge waterfall in NC near where he lives last year. It was pretty wonderful.

Cumberland falls in Kentucky on Cumberland lake. The lake is at record low due to work on the dam; the falls are almost at their natural height, and it is the only place on the east coast to see a moonbow.

We've been to Cumberland lake a couple of times, the house boat capital of the world! Wendy's cousin jumped off 76 falls and survived. That was obviously before video cameras. Beautiful place to recreate!

I have kayaked Tallulah Gorge about 30 times. As you approach the lip of 50-foot high Oceana, the horizon line, the roar and the spray make you so nervous... I get a weak feeling in my stomach just thinking about it.

I feel the same way just thinking about it. Experience makes all the difference. A little craziness doesn't hurt either. Has anybody ever taken the plunge?

There is Black Water Falls near Davis, WV that is terrific. I'm a bit of a waterfall fan myself. Kaaterskill falls in NY is pretty intense. Well, a must see on the East Coast, I think.

Thanks for the link.

Virgin Falls is near Fall Creek Falls (TN).

It is just that - a waterfall that comes out of nowhere. The stream leading up to it comes out of the mouth of a cave, runs about 150 feet, then falls about 110 feet only to disappear into another cave.

It's about a 3 mile hike to get to.

Each of us has our own horizons, but we all gaze at the same moon.

I'll have to go do this one day..you know, when I'm in the mood for an 8 mile hike . We used to hike back to Laurel Fork Falls before we had children,

http://www.waterfall-picture-guide.com/laurel-falls.html

but no hiking since then.

Years ago, my friend Helen and I went on a weekend waterfall trip. She had bought a book listing all the waterfalls in NC. We started out pretty good. Finding and hiking in to take pictures. But by mid afternnoon the first day, our 50plus legs gave out and we finished the trip doing just "drivebys". If we couldn't see it from the car, we didn't see it.

I think it was North Carolina Waterfalls by Kevin Adams. Very good directions, milelage, difficulty etc. He also has one for falls in Virginia and West Virginia.
