Yep 13 turns is ok. Putting back by number of turns is just a general guide to get it close assuming it was aligned correctly before you started.

I am startin my own locksmith business. I won't be officially rollin for another few weeks. I want to be able to offer VW lock and key services for the VW community. I will be able to cut keys by code if you don't have keys for a lock. And I will be able to cut duplicate keys. (at campouts, too). Also, if you have 5ifferent keys for your VW and want them keyed alike, I can rewafer your locks to have them keyed the same. I have been gathering locks and cylinders to have for sale and for used parts.

I have been orderin key blanks and they are available for purchase. Currently, you can buy the blanks and have your local locksmith duplicate them. I will be able to duplicate keys in a few weeks.

The following blanks are $10 each.

The following blanks are $15 each.

hey justin, can i pull the ignition tumbler out the same as a door tumbler? I re-wafered my doors, but since my ignition is half burned out I haven't bothered w/ it yet. Currently it turns with a screwdriver, subaru key, thumbnail, door key etc. So if I need to get a new ignition switch first, then I will wait. If I can pull the tumbler and swap the housing later then I will ask for at least one 64 bug blank My key is a very old backup key, but not the OG. As a matter of fact, none of the 5 vw's I have had have EVER had the OG key. It would be nice

The ignition cylinder is a lil more work involved than the one screw it takes to remove the door lock. But it can be done. I have wafers that can be replaced inside the ignition cylinder so that it won't turn with a screwdriver. LOL Worse case is that the ignition cylinder needs replaced.

As you were sayin, you wanted a original cut key. We can start with a fresh cut key and then rekey your existing locks so that you are startin fresh with your ignition and door locks keyed alike. We can also get you a lid lock if you don't already have one. But I cannot cut factory keys until I get my key code machines(few weeks).

Semi-related question' Ever since I had my door handles off to have my bus painted (like 8 years ago) my door locks have felt very stiff- I'm afraid I will snap the key when I lock/unlock the doors. I usually just go in through the sliding door. Luckily, I almost never lock my bus, only when I'm travelling into bad areas or when I have a load of music gear. Any advice on how to get them freed up again? Thanks and I will be needing some keys, just not sure how many/which VW etc.

Dave, not sure why they'd be turnin tight. Unless some of the lock parts that were still on the doors got painted??

They are fairly easy to remove and install. Hardest part is removin the door panel without breakin clips. After that, it's too 6mm alan screws.

To check to see if it's the door or the handle, remove the handle from the door. Try the key in it while it's off the door. If it's workin smoothly, we move onto checkin the door mechanism.
If the key turns tight while off the door, most likely the lock needs disassembled and cleaned/lubricated. 30+ years of road travelin, dust, and just general sittin builds alot of grime up inside the lock cylinder.

Take one off the door and see where we are. Let me know and we'll go from there. OR, I'll take a look at GGB!

Thanks, Justin

If not, sounds like they just need a good cleanin.

I'd like to get a quote to re-key hatch, cargo, driver door only & ignition (4 total). I have appropriate key for the ignition and hatch lock. Both keys different. All pre '59 Type 2. Also currently ignition key could be taken out when ignition is turned, is this fixable? I would need 1 extra duplicate.

Please let me know.

Tomasz

P.S. What is your level of experience in this type of work?

First thing I would try is turning the key with the door open. Next loosen the handle just a touch and try moving a little side to side while turning key.

Dave, what Snoopy mentioned will work. But i'd suggest removing the lock completely so that you can wipe all the grime I mentioned and lubricate the moving parts and springs. If you've already removed the door panel to loosen the two allen screws, you're already there to clean and lubricate the lock.

Tomasz, experience with a pre 59 Bus? Zero experience. But I do have 13 years in locksmithing. Worked 9 years full time as a residential/commercial locksmith. During that time, I took 100s of auto locks and cylinders apart. When gaining your locksmith knowledge, its mostly a hands on learning. You are educated in basic lock and cylinder repairs. Then you apply that knowledge to the various keys and locks out there.
My Volkswagen experience is just from ownin three Buses and messin with the locks I've owned. Also, I've done repairs and rewafered locks for Volks who wanted them the same. But full on straight VW experience? No, I don't have strictly VW locksmithing experience.
About two months ago, I contacted Gabriel Garcia aka gabvwkeys on Samba. Talked to him on the phone for an hour about VW locls and keys. He told me how he thought that the east coast could use a VW lock and key guy. Due to his health, he's now doin VW work part time.
So between my general locksmithing experience and Gabriel's suggestions, I'm givin it a shot.
And yes, between a new factory cut key and fresh wafers inside the ignition, the key shouldn't be able to come out of the lock. Unless its like the old Jeep Cherokees that seemed to do that from factory!
I'll get back to ya on the rekeying quote.

Thanks! Justin

I would feel more comfortable now sending the locks out. Awaiting the quote.

The key does not appear new, so I do not know if it's the key or the ignition. I'd like to have it fixed though.

btw, the driver handle needs a spring if that's something you do as well?

Thanks,

Tomasz

No problem, Tomasz, I'd suggest Gabriel. He's a great guy! Also, there used to be Mark1vws out of Maryland. But I think he got out of the VW locks and keys. I can't find anything about locks on his website.

I don't have spare handles that old, yet. I'll check into a new spring.

I'm here if you need me.

Thanks, Justin

Justin & Snoopy - What do you recommend for lubing the lock cylinders? In the old days it was graphite, but now it seems the product of choice is a spray can of Houdini. What are your thoughts on this?

Tomasz, I just got off the phone with Gabriel. I mentioned that you were waitin for a response. He said he went from full time VW locks in TX to full time job (non VW) in CA and is now workin on locks and keys after he gets home. He comes home to 100s of emails and is tryin to get through them. That's not includin PMs via Samba. He seems to be a stand up guy that's just overwhelmed with life changes right now.

Justin & Snoopy - What do you recommend for lubing the lock cylinders? In the old days it was graphite, but now it seems the product of choice is a spray can of Houdini. What are your thoughts on this?

Like mechanics and any trade, everyone has their own preference. Some are better than others. Like as big name as WD40 is, I think it's junk. For interior house locks, WD is okay. But for anything that gets weathered, you want something better.

You have two options to lubricate the lock. 1: just pray a penetrating oil in there with the lil stick. 2: You can disassemble the lock and handle then clean and lubricate the parts. If you have the lock apart, I'd suggest usin white grease.
If you're lookin for an easy lube. Use PB blaster. BUT! MAKE SURE when sprayin with a tube into your lock...use a towel to make sure no overspray gets on your paint. Lubricants tend to be dirt magnets when they get on the body of a car. Look at white work vans! LOL Also, don't over do it and have it runnin out the lock. If a little bit doesn't help, you have more issues than just lubrication.

I would feel more comfortable now sending the locks out. Awaiting the quote.

The key does not appear new, so I do not know if it's the key or the ignition. I'd like to have it fixed though.

btw, the driver handle needs a spring if that's something you do as well?

Thanks,

Tomasz

Tomasz, I found a spring for your handle.

I'd love to do the work on your locks and ignition. I did some research on pre '59 Bus locks and cylinders. Not much different than any other VW lock in the end. Held together by set screws and pins. Ignition is taken apart by unpeening the bottom of the cylinder.

If you send me the locks, I promise you they will return keyed alike and workin like new!

Thanks, Justin

I'll add you to the starting list of Volks who want a locking lid lock.
I have a couple Vanagon door handles. But they are pretty well weathered.

What's the difference in the hatch lock and the engine lid lock? I have never looked at the two... guess they aren't interchangeable though... I dont even know if i have black or chrome on mine, so need to determine that first...

I really just need a handle at this point... gave it to a friend to rekey about 5 years ago... been trying to track it down since... someday...
