Does anyone know if there will be another Blue Ridge Bus Tour later in the year?

Yep 13 turns is ok. Putting back by number of turns is just a general guide to get it close assuming it was aligned correctly before you started.

I want to rebuild my Solex carbs. However, I want it done right and worry that I will not do it right. I know of a guy in GA who will rebuild both for around $237 with shipping. Is that a fair price? Am I a wimp for not trying? !mistrust

Might I mildly admonish you for not using the tech questions forum, especially since you're a pretty big dude, but, having said that...
Rebuilding a carb is not rocket surgery, it's mostly cleaning. If the carbs have a flat sealing surface, you lap the surfaces with a piece of plate glass and 220 aluminum oxide paper glued to it. If it has a little raised bead that runs around the surface, cleaning will suffice. Unsweetened Kool-aid mixed triple strength is an excellent cleaning agent once the petroleum products have been removed.
Blow out the passages in the carb the opposite way either gas or air travels thru them, replace the gaskets and brass parts that are supplied with the rebuild kit, and set your float bowl level according to instructions. Adjust your idle jets and throttle stop. That's about it.

Actually, when dealing with Solexes you almost always have to rebush the throttle shaft. Drilling the throttle body and finding the correct bushing should be left to the professionals. I do rebuild my own single carbs, but the side stresses that dual carb throttle shafts endure make them more prone to air leaks there.
To the OP, have you contacted this guy?

He's in Houston, TX and supposed to be the best on PDSIT's. Good luck!

First I wouldn't mess with the solexs unless you are a stock nazi,Probably the second worse VW carb system ever made, right behind the early rabbit solexes. For not too much more you can get a brand new set of dual carbs, webers or solexes . Heck I would run a progressive POC before those solexes later md

If you do decide to go new, this set still has chokes and the price is very reasonable.

May have to jet 'em up a little, but probably not.
It's what I planned to get if the FI didn't work out. Peace!

Just curious, why is that?

JT, I am a chicken sh%$ when it comes to the deep down technical stuff and I need my carbs to work when I get them in. I had heard about the issues with these Solex carbs and that spooked me more. I am also not up for trying to do the throttle bushing.

The pdsit dual is a weird set-up, and as Randy pointed out, is famous for throttle shaft wear, also, the idle circut is in only one carb, which is fed to the other side by the balance tube, which is supposed to eliminate syncing carbs, but from what I've heard doesn't even do that. For whatever reason I didn't realise you were talking about the pdsit's.

I second a recommendation at either getting a new or used set of Webers or baby Dells, most people prefer the Dell's.

well Jim if you have already hear of their issues then you should know, but anyway other than throttle shafts, they are famous about sucking the down spout into the engine. had one do it pone day and pinch the top ring on a piston, then they were set up for an EGR recirulating system with a pump running off the crank pulley, most of these pumps locked up , even plugging them off doesn't work too well. then rubber elbows that would causer vacuum leaks, then the fact that the idle system for both carbs was only on the left carb. If VW hadn't tried to beat the pollution tests with that crappy egr system and had just used standard carb system , they would still only be OK. compaRED TO WEBER OR EVEN BETTER DELLS THEY ARE JUNK. Looks like a pretty good price.

PS, there are some t4 manifolds that only have three holes for Porsche heads, so make sure you get the ones for the VW heads.
